Lighting

It really is amazing how much difference lighting can make in a photo.  For instance, compare these two photos of a white rose, taken on our dining table:






The first photo was taken three days before the second, if I remember correctly, and both were taken with the flower vase on the dining table in almost the same place.
I did take the second photo with a tripod and the f-stop set to its highest number in the second, and even though my diopter has a very shallow DOF it actually seemed to make the parts of the photo near the edge show more in focus and more detail than previous, while shooting wide open or nearly so.
